Kalabari's civil war and exodus

From 1879 two factions of Kalabari's royal family fought for control.

Overview

From 1879 two factions of Kalabari's royal family fought for control. The Barboy or Will Braide group left the old island town of Elem Kalabari for a new settlement at Bakana in 1881. The victorious Amachree group then abandoned Elem Kalabari too, moving to Abonnema in 1882 and to Buguma in 1884. The European traders followed them up the Sombreiro river to Abonnema, and Kalabari became three towns.[1]High confidence
