Kebbi against Gwandu
In 1849 Yakubu Nabame, allowed home to Argungu as a vassal after sixteen years' exile in Sokoto, renounced his allegiance and proclaimed himself Sarkin Kebbi.
Overview
In 1849 Yakubu Nabame, allowed home to Argungu as a vassal after sixteen years' exile in Sokoto, renounced his allegiance and proclaimed himself Sarkin Kebbi. Sokoto besieged Argungu and failed. The war ran on for half a century as Kebbi lay like a wedge between Sokoto and Gwandu: Yakubu's brother Yusufu Mainasara died in battle in the dry Rima floodplain in 1859, and Gwandu's emir Haliru was killed at Karakara in 1860. The Fulani recognised Kebbi's independence by treaty in 1867; war broke out again in 1875 when Fanna went over to Gwandu, and Sama'ila of Kebbi won a string of victories from 1883 until the British ended the fighting.[1]High confidence
Karakara and Fanna are not located.
